The Virginia "Class Action" Scrappers would like to thank all of the players and parents who attended this year's tryouts. With the amount of quality players that attended, it makes the coaching staff's decisions extremely difficult. The 10U age group had 22 players attend, 12U had 36 players, 14U had 19 players, 16U had 26 players, and 18U had 44 players.

Again thank you for attending the Scrappers tryouts.

Sunday was a long hot day that had the team playing back-to-back-to-back games starting at 8:45am.  The Scrappers defeated the Brick City Bombers 11-0, 3-D Fastpitch 2-1 and Carolina Crushers 2-1. They had to fight their way back in the 4th game of the day vs. the Carolina Breeze but the young ladies dug deep and prevailed 6-3 to put them in the championship game to once again face the Chatham Crocs.

The 12u Scrappers were pumped up heading into the Championship game against the Crocs. In the first inning the Scrappers took a 2-0 lead with the Crocs tying it in the bottom of the inning. The Scrappers did not give up and would score another run in the 2nd giving them a 3-2 lead that they held into the bottom of the 3rd. The Crocs had to bring in their best pitcher to get the momentum back in their favor resulting in an 8-3 loss for the Scrappers and a 2nd place finish in the tournament.

Overall it was a great weekend for the 12u Scrappers. The pitchers and the bats really came alive and really showed what this 12u team has to offer.

Former Virginia "Class Action" Scrappers standout Chelsea Kelley wins the 2011 Lowes Senior Class Award.

OVERLAND PARK, KS – Pitcher Chelsea Kelley of Radford University has been selected as the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winner in softball. The announcement and trophy presentation were made today in Oklahoma City by Lowe’s, an official corporate partner of the NCAA®, during the Women’s College World Series®.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

“I feel very honored to be the recipient of the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.  The entire Lowe’s journey this year has been so great for me. This experience has allowed me to get out in the community and try to make a positive impact on those I meet,” Kelley said. “Although Radford is in a smaller community, every person I have met during my collegiate career has positively influenced the person that I am today. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of the Radford community for the last four years and just want to thank everyone who has led me to where I am today.”

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Recently named the Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kelley maintained a 3.94 grade point average through her career. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in sports medicine and has been accepted into the university’s physical therapy doctoral program. A member of Radford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Kelley has represented the school at the Big South’s leadership conference. She is involved in numerous charitable activities, including Special Olympics and the Ronald McDonald House.

“I am so honored and humbled to have had the opportunity to coach Chelsea over the past four years. To see a kid go through so many challenges throughout her career, and to see her handle each obstacle with such dignity is a true testament to her character,” head coach Mickey Dean said. “One of the more astonishing things is for this young lady to win the fan vote against such great odds. I believe that shows the incredible impact she has on the people she has come in contact with.”

Kelley’s exploits on the softball field have led to Radford winning three straight Big South regular season championships and advancing to its first two NCAA tournaments. Kelley finished in the top five in eight career pitching categories at Radford, including second in saves and third in wins.

“Chelsea has certainly fought through injuries during her outstanding career, but she’s proven that giving up on her dream was never a consideration,” said David Geren, Lowe’s vice president of marketing. “She’s used her experiences to make herself a better player on the field and to build a better community off the field.”

2011 - 10U Scrappers finish in 2nd place in first two tournaments

The 10U Scrappers are off to a strong start this spring after finishing in 2nd place in their first two tournaments of the year!

Their first tournament was the NSA Youth Challenge.  In their first game of the tournament they lost a heartbreaker to Maroon Crush 5-6 and then went on to beat the Augusta Flames 5-0, Extreme Force 10-3, and the Maroon Crush 12-8 before making it to the championship game.  They fought hard in the championship game, but lost to Augusta Flames 8-2.  It was a good start for the girls at the plate scoring 34 runs in 5 games!

The NSA Youth Kick-Off tournament was the next tournament for our 10U girls.  They again made it to the Championship game by winning all but one of their pool games that included a 13-0 win over the Stealerz, 7-2 win over the Extreme Force.  Again, they were very strong at the plate with 31 runs scored for this tournament.  They played Virginia Edge in the Championship game and led the game until the very end and just couldn’t hold on during the last inning, losing 6-3.

We’re excited about the strong start and they are only going to keep improving.  They are hoping that they will bring home a Championship trophy very soon, and have been within reach of it twice now and just missed it, but that has made them a strong team and given them the drive to make it to the next level!

This is the second year in a row that the 14U team has qualified for this tournament.

Scrappers 18U - Austin wins Softball Nation Fastpitch Nationals

The SoftballNation nationals did not start well for the Scrappers-Austin 18-U team in Virginia Beach last Thursday, but the tournament ended well for the Roanoke-based squad as they won four straight games on Sunday in 105 degree heat to capture the championship. The elements played a key role in the quality of play as players fought the heat during a grueling day that began with an 8:30 AM start and ended at around 5:00 PM.
The Scrappers-Austin team drove to Virginia Beach early on Thursday AM and got out of the cars and played two pool games. They lost 3-2 to a very good Stafford Storm squad, then blew a 4-2 lead versus the Newport News Lady Pilots in the bottom of the last inning. With two outs and none on, the Pilots benefited from two costly errors to rally for a 5-4 win on a walkoff hit. Scrapper spirits were not very high after a lackluster beginning.
On Friday, the Scrappers-Austin blasted the NOVA Blaze 10-2, and Delco Tsunami 10-0, to end pool play 2-2. With the last game ending before lunch, the heat was not much of a factor in the games. The schedule also gave members of the team time to enjoy various beach area activities.
On Saturday morning, the Scrappers faced the Blaze in the first round of double elimination play and hit three home runs in routing them 19-6. This pitted the Scrappers vs. the Pilots once again, and the Pilots had been a difficult team for the Scrappers to beat all summer. The contest was again a thriller with the Pilots winning 7-6 in an eight inning ITB game. This was a very difficult loss and a deflated Scrapper squad had to play an elimination game vs. the Bi State Misfits immediately following the game. In a typical "going through the motions" game the Scrappers survived a late Misfits rally by scoring a last inning run to pull out a 7-6 win.
In order to accomplish their goal of winning the tournament, the Scrappers had to win four consecutive games on Sunday. This would be a tall order in any setting, but on a day that the temperature resided at well over 100 degrees, the task would be daunting. The day began with the Scrappers playing their best game of the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Storm. The Pilots were beaten by the Virginia Beach area Lady Aces squad so the Scrappers had to go face the Pilots, a team that had beaten them three times in a row in very intense games. The Pilots jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning, but in high level slugfest, the Scrappers won a double inning ITB classic 12-9. This meant that the Scrappers would have to beat the Lady Aces twice to claim the title.
In the first championship game, the Scrappers scored a run in the top of the seventh to win an exciting game over the Lady Aces, 9-8. The scores were elevated because the heat drained energy from pitchers and fielders and no defensive play was routine. The win set up one game to take it all. Things did not start well as the Scrappers got hammered in the first inning and trailed 7-0. The Scrappers played to their name as the refused to give up. Trailing 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth, the Scrappers had to strike out intentionally in order to have the game go one additional inning(as time was about to expire). The Lady Aces added two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to lead 12-6 heading into the bottom of the final inning. In fairy tale fashion, the Scrappers rallied for six runs in their final at bat to force another ITB inning. The Scrappers held the Lady Aces without a run, and in the bottom of the seventh they sacrificed their ITB runner to third and plated the winning run on a squeeze bunt. The 13-12 victory was not pretty, but definitely showed the character and guts of the team.
Hollee Warlitner, Kaitlyn Culler, Tamara Smith, and Rebecca Williams were recognized as all tournament players from the Scrappers. Warlitner hit nine home runs during the eleven game weekend. The Scrappers-Austin team ran their season record to 40-10-2 with this weekend's games.
